I Was There - Puerto Princesa Underground River (New 7 Wonders of Nature)

Like many other Filipinos and Foreign Nationalities all over the world who supported, glad I cast a vote for Puerto Princesa Underground River, and now it made it to the provisional list as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

With friends Toto, Jenny & Dave
I went to Palawan with my friends Dave, Toto & Jenny last March 2011 and tour at Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park commonly and now famously known as Puerto Princesa Underground River was one of the itinerary. That time, tour service providers and even the community are busy campaigning votes for PPUR to be included in the list of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Local government also run promos and campaign through sms and web voting, information campaigns in local and national newspapers and all other media and means.  And the effort finally paid up.

My interest in PPUR was influenced by my boss who went here with her family few years ago and told me not to miss seeing this place.  It was good that when I finally had the chance to visit Palawan it was one of the itinerary. Located 50km from the city of Puerto Princesa the underground river is navigable via motorized boat from Port Sabang

There was a lot of local & foreign tourist that time and we just waited for our numbers to be called to board the paddle boat that will bring us inside.  Boat man also serves as tour guide inside the cave. One of the tourist will be assigned to hold a spotlight and was asked by the boat man to point the light to the spot as he instructed.

Excitement filled our nerves as we enter the mouth of the cave.  It was peach dark and the only light that illuminates inside was our spotlight and the light of the boat ahead of us.  Boatman explained that the cave features a limestone karst mountain landscape with 8.2 km navigable underground river. Stalactites and stalagmites formations that features a variety of shapes (human, objects, vegetables, animals and anything) that the mind can imagine can be seen inside are overwhelming. Everybody was quiet and awed as the boatman points us to the different formations. We were astonished by the sight and it made me marvel that God created beautiful things even in the almost unreachable place such as Puerto Princesa Underground River.  PPUR is also reputed to be one of the longest underground river in the world.

Congratulations Puerto Princesa Underground River.  Congratulations Palawan, Congratulations Philippines.  And congratulations to us Filipinos.

Sadly I was not able to capture the images inside the cave with my Sony Cybershot camera due to lack of light, I don't know if it is equipped with a night vision or low light shot program.  Special thanks to my friend Toto for some of the pictures featured in this entry.

  6. Sadly, I didn't enjoy much of the tour. I got easily bored since I wasn't much of a cave fan. :( But at least, I still get to say that I finally got to experience this tour back in Palawan. :)

  18. My first and only experience of Palawan was rather bittersweet. The best part was of course the Underground River tour (this was last year, so it wasn't mobbed by tourists yet since winning its current international accolade). The trip was far too short! I would have loved to go to all the hidden beach heavens the place has.
